چکیده

Central to the problem of addiction is the fact that, once addicted, subjects can show intense drug craving and a high risk of relapse, even following long-term abstinence. This implies that addiction involves a number of long lasting changes in neural systems that need to be identified. Indeed, because of the robust emotional value of drug addiction, initial research into the neural bases of this phenomenon has focused mainly on the similarity existing between the circuits activated by natural (food intake, sexual or social interaction ...) vs artificial (drugs) rewards. On the basis of this initial research, several points can be made. First, a fundamental property of a natural or an artificial reward is its ability to elicit goal-directed behaviours; this ability makes it an important component of associative learning. Second, addiction is not synonymous only with pleasure. Indeed, withdrawal, drug seeking and drug craving carry overall aversive reactions that can also be associated with neutral stimuli that, in turn, can gain control of behaviour. In view of this, a considerable amount of research has been conducted to date aimed at defining the extent to

Neural and psychological mechanisms underlying compulsive drug seeking habits and drug memories – indications for novel treatments of addiction*

This review discusses the evidence for the hypothesis that the development of drug addiction can be understood in terms of interactions between Pavlovian and instrumental learning and memory mechanisms in the brain that underlie the seeking and taking of drugs. It is argued that these behaviours initially are goal-directed, but increasingly become elicited as stimulus-response habits by drug-as...

Autobiographical Brand Images Give a Higher Chance to False Memory as Compared to Neutral Images

Consumers’ prior experiences shape an episodic memory which largely influences their decision-making process. This episodic memory is mainly linked to cognitive and emotional perception and we know that a brand image influences our cognitive and emotional perception. Nevertheless, it has not been well described how autobiographical memories of brand images differ from those of other types of im...

Psychomotor stimulant addiction: a neural systems perspective.

The reinforcing (rewarding) effects of psychomotor stimulants (cocaine and amphetamine) depend on the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system innervating the nucleus accumbens (Wise, 1981; for review, see Koob, 1992), perhaps especially the shell subregion (Bassareo and Di Chiara, 1997). Prominent theories of addiction are based on adaptations associated with both sensitization to and withdrawal from...

Neural Correlates of Craving in Methamphetamine Abuse

Introduction: Methamphetamine is a powerful psychostimulant that causes significant neurological impairments with long-lasting effects and has provoked serious international concerns about public health. Denial of drug abuse and drug craving are two important factors that make the diagnosis and treatment extremely challenging. Here, we present a novel and rapid noninvasive method...

Comparison of Addiction Memory Intensity and Self-Control in Successful and Unsuccessful Addiction Withdrawal

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare addiction memory intensity and self-control in successful and unsuccessful addiction withdrawal. Method: In this causal-comparative study, the population of the study consisted of male addicts who referred to Rasht addiction treatment clinics (District one) in 2018. Among them, 45 individuals with successful addiction withdrawal (more t...
